Battling Gravitation

Concept as Context
When the KSEVT project was first presented in 2010, it was received with mixed expectations and misgivings as to whether it was at all possible or justified to build the proposed building in the borough of Vitanje, which forms a cluster of several villages with only 2,400 inhabitants. With its low population, its remoteness from major road connections, its two small churches on the hills and pasture land that comes straight into the village centre, the location was built on the traditions of the Romans, the Middle Ages and the early Industrial Era, but has been overlooked by more recent civilisation currents. The new building is located at the edge of the village, between the road and a brook that meanders through the hilly pastures, next to the sports ground and behind the village inn, on the site of a former cultural centre, which was demolished for the purposes of the new construction. KSEVT opened its doors in September 2012 with the simultaneous presentation of the architecture, a monument and a work of conceptual art. The building and its programme form part of a comprehensive, long-term artistic project by three Postgravity artists, Živadinov, Zupančič and Turščič, and represents an intermediate station between the Earth and space, thus offering a platform for implementing the culturalisation of space as a new cultural paradigm.
