Another Modern Architecture Intervention on the Peninsula

Numerous historical monuments and archaeological sites of the ‘peninsula’, which survived destruction during a turbulent history, are the material memory of Antiquity, the Middle Ages and Renaissance in Zadar.

The new organisation of space, the new multimedia installation and the existing medieval walls of the Minor Arsenal overlap harmoniously and represent another modern architectural intervention in a rich historical context.

The first mention of the medieval fort within the city situated at the point controlling the entry into the port can be traced back to 1243. The fortification of the fortress ‘Kaštel’ was ordered by the Duke of Zadar Leonard Quirin following the recommendation of the Venetian authorities, which were concerned about the rebellion of the citizens of Zadar.
The fortification of Kaštel was thus important for Venetian rule in the terms of defence, but not against external enemies, and rather against the people of Zadar.
The fort is in the most prominent part of the city by the sea, and this suited the aims of Venice as this provided a fortified location that could enable an evacuation by sea. Kaštel then maintained this role for the next few hundred years.

The lower part of the entrance tower, which was later converted into a gunpowder warehouse – the so-called Minor Arsenal – reveals typical medieval elements of the entry and fort with drawbridges. It was made of large, well-carved stone blocks. The upper part has five coats of arms of Venetian officials and the winged Lion of St. Mark, the symbol of the Republic of Venice.
